The Whyte’s

Mr & Mrs David & Olive Whyte and their son Duncan Whyte, contacted our service to seek advice and information regarding the possibility of securing rented accommodation through the Local Authority or a Housing Association.

The couple and their son, were living in accommodation which they owned but the property had become unsuitable due to health problems.  David and Olive had become unable to manage the stairs and Duncan was a wheelchair user so he only had the use of the ground floor.  Their requirements were to find two properties one for David & Olive and the other for Duncan, both  needed to be fully accessible, both had to have two bedrooms, and they needed to be very close in location as the family are very close.

We discussed their options and the family were advised of the different registered social landlords operating in their area of choice and we helped them complete the applications forms.  In addition, we wrote a letter of support detailing the family’s complex needs and referred them to the Occupational Therapy department to be assessed for a Housing Needs Assessment.

The applications were made to various landlords, but Tenants First Housing Co-operative contacted us to say that they were building a new scheme in Peterhead which included four 2 bedroom, fully accessible bungalows all of which would be suitable for the family.  We were asked to nominate the family along with other clients to be considered for the properties.

Fortunately both David and Olive, and Duncan were successful in the nomination process and were allocated two of the bungalows.  We worked with them, occupational therapy and Tenants First to ensure that the correct adaptations were made to the properties in advance of the completion date and in November 2008 the family moved into their new homes!
